Faced with climate challenges and the need to strengthen the security of supply, Switzerland has adopted a new energy strategy. The Electricity Act, approved by referendum in June 2024, aims to promote the production of renewable electricity, particularly solar, hydraulic, wind and biomass.
The objective is clear: to reduce dependence on imports and guarantee a stable and sustainable supply. For more information on the law, visit the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) website.
Solar panels play a central role in this new strategy. The law sets ambitious production targets for solar photovoltaics, particularly on rooftops and façades.
For private individuals, the law introduces incentive mechanisms, such as subsidies and administrative simplifications, to encourage the adoption of solar installations.
For the cantons, the adoption of this law introduces the obligation to use this energy source, via the future article 45a of the Energy Act (LEne). The federal obligation concerns in particular buildings over 300 m2, excluding residential buildings, which will have to be equipped with photovoltaic panels by 2032.
In addition, the law provides for measures to accelerate the development of large Alpine solar installations, capable of producing electricity even in winter.
In Switzerland, several financial aids are available to install solar panels. They vary according to the canton and municipality, and it is important to check with local authorities to find out the specific programmes for your region.
