Awnings and solar shading

An awning shades a terrace or balcony and folds back against the façade. Three things decide the price: the projection, which sets the shaded area, the fabric quality, which decides how it holds up after ten summers, and the arm type, articulated or full cassette depending on exposure to rain and wind. Adjustable louvre blinds are fitted in front of glazing and cut heat while keeping daylight, which makes them common on heavily glazed new builds.

Roller and hinged shutters

A roller shutter is fitted externally in renovation, with a visible casing, or recessed into the lintel in new builds. In renovation the decisive technical point is the space above the window: it sets the roll diameter, hence the slat thickness and the insulation achieved. Hinged shutters remain the answer for older buildings and protected areas, where local rules often require the original appearance to be kept.

Bioclimatic pergolas

A bioclimatic pergola differs from a gazebo through its adjustable louvres, which meter the shade through the day and close in the rain. Proper installation requires a slab or footings able to carry the load, drainage integrated into the posts, and a check of local rules: above a certain area, planning permission is required in most municipalities in French-speaking Switzerland.

Motorisation and control

Motorisation often accounts for a third of the budget. It earns its place on wide openings, hard-to-reach glazing and equipment used daily. A radio motor avoids running cables through existing walls, which changes the renovation cost substantially. Centralised control only pays off from several units onwards, or when a wind sensor must retract the awning while you are away.

What makes a quote vary

Four things explain most of the gap between two offers: the number of openings, site access, which may require a platform on upper floors, motorisation, and the quality of the fabric or profile. Always ask for fitting priced separately from the equipment, and for the manufacturer's warranty on the motor, which is the part that fails first.
